Cold Sores, also known as fever blisters, are cause by herpes simplex virus 1 or HSV-1. Do not think that cold sores are sexually transmitted just because it is caused by a herpes virus. The herpes simplex virus 1 is different from genital herpes although they are somewhat related.

Cold sores are very contagious thus they are very common. When exposed to the virus, cold sores do not necessarily come out at once. Usually, the virus can stay and lie dormant in the body and cause cold sores when triggered by fever or other viral infection. Though going to the doctor for treatment is a sound option, there are home remedies for cold sores that are effective and yet inexpensive. Here are some examples.

An immediate treatment for cold sores is ice. No preparation is needed and it will cost almost nothing. You just have to rub ice on the affected size for a few minutes to dissipate the sores.  

Another quick way to treat cold sores is by putting a small amount of salt on the sore. It may be a little painful but it will surely help a little to dispel the sore.

Lemon balm is also used as home remedy for cold sores. It can either be applied as a topical cream or brewed as tea. Olive leaf extracts can also be applied to cure sores. You just have to dab the extract to the sores to see the effects.

Although these home remedies for cold sores are effective, it is still best to improve your immune system to prevent different viral and bacterial infections. To avoid cold sores breakout it is suggested that you avoid acidic and salty food. Chocolates, peanuts and peas should also be minimized if not totally avoided. Instead, eat food rich in vitamins A, C and E like fruits and vegetables
